Education International

Education International is worldwide organization for employees in the Education sector.

EI was established in 1993 with the fusion between two worldwide organizations of teachers unions.

Education International

We are the voice of teachers and education workers around the world. Through our 375 member organisations, we represent more than 33 million teachers and education support personnel in 180 countries and territories.

The World Congress is the highest governing body of Education International. Every five years it elects the Executive Board that runs the organisation and ensures the implementation of decisions taken at Congress.

EI played an active role in the drafting of the UNESCO Recommendation Concerning the Status of Higher Education Teaching Personnel, which was adopted in 1997.

EI's priorities:

  • Quality education for all. Each and every person deserves free quality public education. EI believe education is a human right and a public good, which must be accessible to all.
  • The profession. As the global federation of education unions, EI promote and protect the rights and status of teachers and education support personnel.
  • Rights and democracy. The defence of human rights, particularly trade union rights, and democracy is at the very core of EI's mission.
  • Building union power. As the global federation of education unions, EI work to develop, strengthen, and grow the education union movement across the world to the benefit of all.

Mugwena Maluleke from South Africa is President of EI, and David Edwards from the United States is General Secretary. The EI headquarters are in Brussels.
