ETUCE

The European branch of Education International (EI) is called the European Trade Union Committee for Education (ETUCE).

ETUCE is a federation of 127 education trade unions in 51 countries, representing in total 11 million members all over Europe.

The trade union federation and European social partner for education in Europe

ETUCE is also the teachers' social partner at European level and defends the teachers' interests in the European Commission. ETUCE was established in 1997.

ETUCE is composed of national trade unions of teachers and other staff in all parts of the education sector: Early childhood, primary and secondary education, vocational education, training, higher education and research. In addition to being Education International regional structure in Europe, ETUCE  is also affiliated to ETUC – European Trade Union Confederation.

ETUCE's Goals

  • To promote and implement the goals of Education International (EI) in the European Region
  • To assist and advise the EI (Education International) Executive board in policies to be undertaken by the European region. Executing responses to the policies and proposals from other international organizations such as OECD or UNESCO.
  • To develop and maintain positive relationships with organizations in Europe with similar objectives, including ETUC, and PERC/ITUC.
  • To determine and promote policies in relation to the Council of Europe, and other European organizations that work with education policies.
  • To promote and develop policies for the European Union and EFTA.
  • To represent member organizations in EU’s consultative structures at the EU meetings.
  • To respond to proposals, policies and directives from the EU that affects The members of European Education Unions.
  • To develop and implement projects and programs designed to further the interests of education unions and especially EU/EFTA countries.
  • To be the social partner for the employees in the educational sector of EU’s social dialogue processes.
  • To be main connector of representatives in the Education Unions in ETUC’s structure.
