Salary negotiations on a special basis
Salary negotiation on a special basis
Some salary claims can be processed outside of the annual local negotiations. This applies especially if there have been significant changes in the employee's responsibility or work tasks, or if NTNU has challenges in recruiting or retaining employees. Such negotiations are conducted continuously throughout the year and are based on one of the following conditions:
- Significant changes in position
A salary claim can be submitted if the work tasks have changed significantly. The changes can be made visible by attaching the job description or by comparing previous and new work tasks. It is worth noting that the work tasks must be at a qualitatively higher level than before. Examples include increased responsibility or difficulty.
Cf: HTA 2.5.3.- 1a
- Planned measures by NTNU
Planned or implemented measures that lead to increased efficiency, productivity, simplification, or better user orientation. It is the employer who defines the goals for the measure and how large a pot can be distributed among the employees who have contributed to the measure. The parties negotiate the distribution of the allocation among the employees.

Reorganizations at NTNU
There is room for salary adjustment based on unjustified salary differences after reorganizations. Negotiations require coverage in NTNU's budget.
Cf: HTA 2.5.3. - 1c
- Extraordinary effort
If you have made an extraordinary work effort, a claim can be submitted. Extraordinary work effort means an effort that goes beyond what can be expected in your position.
Cf: HTA 2.5.3. - 2
- Recruit or retain labor
In cases where it is particularly difficult to recruit and retain qualified labor, there is room to negotiate salary. An example is if you receive an offer for another job, and the employer is at risk of losing valuable expertise.
Cf: HTA 2.5.3. - 2
- Imbalances due to discrimination
Where salary differences cannot be explained by anything other than discrimination based on gender, pregnancy, leave for childbirth or adoption, care responsibilities, ethnicity, religion, belief, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, or combinations of these grounds, the employer shall rectify the salary differences.
Cf: HTA 2.5.3 - 3
We recommend that you request a salary discussion with your immediate manager if you believe you are covered by one of the conditions. The claim is normally submitted by the employer and sent through official channels to the HR and HSE manager.
Claims based on extraordinary effort or recruitment considerations are discussed with the trade unions. In case of disagreement, the employer's last offer applies.
Negotiations on a special basis are usually held twice per semester, but salary claims can be submitted continuously throughout the year. The time for negotiations is determined by the HR and HSE department at NTNU.
